PPND supports the revitalization of the Pittsburgh region's distressed neighborhoods into desirable and diverse communities by raising funds and making strategic investments in community development/improvement organizations. In addition to being our primary funder, PPND's classes in collaboration were instrumental in the formation of the Hilltop Alliance. The Birmingham Foundation is a private, independent foundation created on May 1, 1996 with assets from the sale of The South Side Hospital. The foundation is dedicated to health-related and human services grant-making in the south neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which are part of the 15203, 15210 and 15211 zip code areas. The Birmingham Foundation serves as a funding conduit for the Hilltop Alliance. This has allowed us to begin working towards our mission while we await 501(c)3 status. The Brashear Association, a South Pittsburgh community service agency in the settlement house tradition, supports and enriches families to build more vital lives and neighborhoods. Through its provision of human services and community action, The Brashear Association, Inc. recognizes strengths and diversity and encourages self-help, citizen education and participation, and community improvement and involvement. The Brashear Association helped the Hilltop Alliance outreach to the social service clients in the Hilltop Area. Additionally, they have helped us to connect with other agencies for collaboration. PCRG brings community groups, financial institutions, nonprofits, and government agencies together to collaborate in the revitalization of Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods. PCRG provides services to protect homeowners from predatory lending, advocate for reinvestment in Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods, assist community groups in the revitalization of Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods, and report on lending practices in the region. The Hilltop Alliance has recently joined as a community group member of the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group. The Department of City Planning sets the framework for the City's development through policy and development review by the Planning Commission and through administration of the zoning ordinance. The department pursues community development by facilitating community planning processes, supporting community-based and technical assistance organizations and programs, and administrating the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. The Hilltop Alliance has a contract with the Department of City Planning. They administer ACCBO funding for our community engagement and development strategies. The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh (URA) is the City of Pittsburgh’s economic development agency, committed to creating jobs, expanding the City’s tax base and improving the vitality of businesses and neighborhoods. The URA has committed themselves to helping revitalize the Brownsville Road and Warrington Avenue business districts. They will be working with the Hilltop Alliance to develop and carry out strategies. The Community Development Collaborative (CD Collaborative) is a coalition of advocacy, funding, and technical assistance agencies. They aim to create an effective and efficient support system that helps their clients, Community Development Agencies and Community Based Organizations in Allegheny County, more quickly advance their community revitalization goals. Membership includes; Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), the Department of City Planning, the Mayor’s Office, the Community Technical Assistance Center (CTAC), the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh (CDCP), the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group (PCRG), NeighborWorks Western Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development (PPND). The CD Collaborative is currently focusing their efforts on four corridors in the Pittsburgh area, one of which is the Hilltop. They provide support to our work and are committed to making sure the action ideas that come out of our Everyday Democracy efforts are a success. |
