Vacant Properites
We all know that vacant properties create and eyesore, but their effects reach further than aesthetics.  They bring down property values, encourage crime, and create safety hazards.  We have multiple vacant or abandoned properties on the Hilltop.  Will you rise to the challenge and help us to re-purpose this abandoned land?

The Vacant Properties Action team is committed to addressing the issue of vacant properties at multiple levels.  Some of the groups goals include:

A.  Creating viable green space on land owned by Pittsburgh, Mt. Oliver, or Community  Development Corporations.

B.  Making residents aware of Pittsburgh's Side Lot program: a program that allows a homeowner to purchase a vacant lot adjacent to their property at a very small cost.

C.  Holding landowners accountable and encouraging Pittsburgh and Mt. Oliver to fine derelict landowners and land bank abandoned properties.

The Re-purposing Vacant Properties Action Team is not alone in our efforts because city-wide, this is a "hot" issue.  The Action Team has been blessed with multiple partners and advisers.

Hilltop Alliance Vacant Properties Action Team needs your help!  Here are some of the ways you can get involved:

Attend our monthly meetings at the Mt. Oliver Borough Building on the third Tuesday of every month at 6pm.

Attend our Action Plan and Development Training on Saturday, September 11th.

Volunteer to canvass in Mt. Oliver (other neighborhoods to follow) with information on the landscaping project on Mountain St. and Wagner Ave.

Volunteer to help the weekend of September 25th to prepare and landscape the corner of Mountain St. and Wagner Ave.

Volunteer to help water Mountain St. and Wagner Ave. throughout the month of October.

Volunteer to help upkeep Mountain St. and Wagner Ave.  This will require but three volunteer days in a year.

Get on a list to have a plot or be involved with the community garden on Beltzhoover Ave.  Many factors are still up in the air, but the more people who are on board, the greater the chances of success.

What's new with Re-Purposing Vacant Properties PDF Print E-mail
The Re-Purposing Vacant Properties Team is hard at work and is working on the following projects.

A.  Landscaping at the corner of Mountain St. and Wagner Ave.  This is a "gateway" lot that many drivers pass as they drive into the Hilltop.  This will be the first of several "gateway" greening projects.

B.  Preparing to plant a community garden on Beltzhoover Ave.  The Re-Purposing Vacant Properties team will be contracting with Grow Pittsburgh to do soil testing, create a landscape map, and create a plan for us to turn empty lots on Beltzhoover Ave. into a community garden.  If all goes as we hope, we will plant a garden in the spring.

C.  Sending citizens to the Reclaiming Vacant Properties Conference on October 13, 14, and 15.

D.  Looking into potential resources to put signs in "gateway" lots in the Hilltop.

The team meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6pm at the Mt. Oliver Borough Building.  We would love to see you there!
