One-Stop-Shop
25% of the families in the Hilltop live below the poverty line.  Unemployment and high school drop out rates significantly exceed average city levels.  Many of us and our neighbors need help feeding their children, fixing their houses, and finding employment.  There are services and programs in place to help people with many of these issues, but many residents do not know they exist.  Neighbors and professionals need to know where to go to find or learn about all of the services available.

The One-Stop-Shop action team is dedicated to simplifying the search for services for you and your neighbors.  The groups short term goals include the coordination of services and the formation of a comprehensive and continually updated online service directory.  The group's long term goals are to facilitate the successful creation of a multi-service center in a single location.

We need you to get involved.  We will be successful only if many people contribute.

Partners include the Hilltop Health Center and Allegheny County Department of Human Services.

Coordinating Hilltop Services PDF Print E-mail

The One-Stop-Shop Action team met again on February 24th for a successful meeting.  The group is working to coordinate social services on the Hilltop and will, for its first concrete action, create and make available an updated social services list for the Hilltop.  As a starting point, we will be using the Birmingham Foundation's services list.  We need your help.

Please e-mail us with information about your service.  Let us know what you are aware of that has changed in the past several years.  Let us know what is incorrect on the Birmingham list.  This will indeed be a community effort.  Everyone needs to know what you know.

The One-Stop-Shop Action Team meets the last Wednesday of every month from 6-8pm at the Allentown Senior Center and all are welcome to attend.  For more information on the groups activities and how you can help, please contact Pat Murphy.

Building on the grassroots PDF Print E-mail
The One-Stop-Shop team is working hard to coordinate services in the Hilltop.  Special care is being taken to include all reputable grassroots efforts into the larger effort and to not duplicate services.

Work has been done towards forming a One-Stop-Shop by the Joshua Development Corporation, working out of Potter's House Cathedral in Mt. Oliver City Neighborhood.  A subgroup of the team is determining how far they have gotten and how the Action Team can build off of, rather than duplicate their efforts.

We need everyone on board.  If you are with the county, represent a grassroots, corporate, or government agency that serves the Hilltop, or care about our ability to meet the needs of our community, please contact Pat Murphy.

Action Forum: One Stop Shop
Monday, November 16, 2009

At the Action Forum, the Hilltop One-Stop-Shop action team was created.  The goal is to create a one-stop-shop service and community center.  At the brief meeting on November 16th, the following was determined.
  • Present partners included Mercy Behavioral Health and the Beltzhoover Health Center.
  • There are 42 congregations on the Hilltop that can provide services as well as a variety of non-profits.  It is important to determine what services are currently provided.
  • The Birmingham Foundation has a list of Hilltop providers.
  • The Action Team is working on a project that is not theoretical.  If completed it will be a physical end result that will be beneficial to all of the neighborhoods on the Hilltop.
  • Location is important and needs to be accessible.  The entire group must agree on the location.
  • Vacant schools are not a feasible idea for location because of a variety of expensive problems.
  • Other location ideas include the Warrington Recreation Center and the former Iron and Glass Bank Building at Bausman and Brownsville.
